Junior Golf Development at Golf Club St. Leon-Rot

May 30th, 2011

juniors-11

On our travels either installing studio or simply visiting customers we get to see how other countries and clubs embrace new ideas and systems to help develop the game of golf at their Academies.

In the spring we have been installing 4 studios at Golf Club St. Leon-Rot just south of Frankfurt, Germany. One early evening as I arrived to prepare for a day’s training the next day Mervyn who had been installing the studios that week told me to come and have a look at what was happening on the range that evening.  To my surprise the range was absolutely full with kids and when I mean full there were at least 120 of them hitting balls or having tuition.  Mervyn said that while he was there this was a regular occurrence in an evening/late afternoon. So I had to investigate further. That evening I sat down with the Academy Director Fabian Bünker for a dinner and asked him if there was a special event happing with juniors this week on the golf range.

His reply was “No, our junior academy is my main focus and he and his team of 8 coaches concentrate in developing the kids from a young age to feed their first teams and ultimately the national side”. He said that “St Leon Rot have a team of coaches for the juniors and then a team of coaches for the adult teams and member with a full time physio as well. Planning for the future is one of their main aims not just to develop golfers to a high level but they realise that this will also benefit the club in the long term.

It doesn’t stop with a great learning centre and range.  The facilities start for the kids with a short 9 hole course with holes between 20 – 50 yards long.  Then they progress 9 hole longer course, 18 hole course and a championship course. They have developed a clear path for kids to learn and progress even from a young age.  To see more in my interview with Fabian follow this link to Junior golf Development.

So what is the mission of the regarding the Acdemy at Golf Club- St. Leon-Rot Fabian??

“The mission of Golf Club St. Leon-Rot is to be an innovative, reliable and service-oriented club. We want to offer the best environment, infrastructure and facilities for golf. We have implemented a Junior Development Program, in which we commit to support the young regional children due to the Clubs ambitious athletic attitude and its strong connection to the region. The whole Program is based on a five-pillar-strategy. The five pillars are golf skills, athletic skills, mental skills, social skill and skills for school and job. Besides preparing talented players for competitive golf, our main goal is to build up their personality in terms of concentration, coordination, discipline, sense of fair play, politeness, ability to work in a team, good behavior and manners.
In our Junior Development Program we instruct over 500 children in groups of four to twelve kids. We have ten fully qualified golf professionals and six golf professional apprentices. Our goal is to develop players for our Men- and Ladies-Teams, to strengthen their top-position in Germany and Europe. The Men-Team is seven-time German Champion and European-Club-Trophy-Winner. The Ladies are four-time German Champion and won the European Club Trophy four-times, too. We also have the vision, that one of our players is part of the European Ryder Cup Team in 2018. To make this vision come true, we implemented a special high-level-sponsorship - the “Club 2018”.
To secure this number one spot in Germany we coach the teams in golf-, athletic- and mental-skills on a daily base. We work together with a special educated golf-athletic-coach and a fully qualified mental-coach.

Every team has once a week a team training golf and team training athletic. Additionally we arrange multiple mental-workshops for the teams and for single player. On holidays we host camps, were the kids have a full-time support.
Again the Golf Club St. Leon-Rot is always interested in modern and high-quality infrastructure. Alongside two 18-hole courses and one 9-hole course, we offer a big pitching-, chipping- and putting-area, plus a five-hole bambini-course. Our driving-range with 54 boxes has 22 canopied and 15 heated boxes. Furthermore we have three video-boxes and one SAM-Putt-Lab-Studio. To increase the level of infrastructure we re-engineer our video boxes, build a fourth video-box and change from Scope- and Trackman-technology, to the new GASP-System. The GASP Golf Swing Analysis Software is very versatile and modern Video-System. It combines a force plate, a 3D sensor vest and a launch monitor all in one system. The GASP-Software provides on-screen drawing tools, action replay and simultaneous multi camera capture.

The Golf Club St. Leon-Rot is proud to offer this new innovative-system to all members and guests. ”

Extra Service and Renenue From Using The Ebook

Paul SherringtonSee what Paul Sherrington PGA Professionl says about our Ebook solution.

“I have been a professional now for 15 years and have been at Four Ashes Golf Centre all that time where I am a full time coach. I have been a GASP Systems customer now for almost 10 years and during that time I have used their system to help me with my coaching…. Earlier this year I upgraded to GASP Lab at first to take advantage of some of the programs new features. Steve Gould at GASP said I should give the GASP ebook solution a go, as many of GASP’s customers he said were increasing their revenue by using EBOOK as well as improving their communication with their students.

At first like all things new I was a little sceptical, but I could see the benefits in principle so I decided to do a little market research before I committed. I asked as many students as I could over a period of 2 - 3 weeks and found that a good proportion of my students would be prepared to subscribe to their own personal ebook manual. Over the last couple of months I have 45 students signed up who pay a yearly fee which is the same as an hours lesson.

As a busy full time golf coach its very difficult for me to increase my income without increasing the pupils I take. There lies the problem for me as I’m pretty full in the season with no extra time, however the ebook almost adds no time to my day, increasing my income, improving my service, promoting me as a brand and improving customer loyalty long term. I do the students analysis during the lessons and upload all of my ebooks in the evening when I get home or at the end of the day. .

To all Golf Professionals who want to increase their income substantially, improve their service I recommend GASP Systems Ebook as it will become as important in time to me as the actual analysis program itself.”

Casio FH100 setup for Golf

Setting up a Casio Fh100 Setup for Golf

casio FH 100 setup

casio FH 100 setup

There are 3 section in the Casio setup your need to get right.

Speed choice HS or Std mode.
Hs will capture at high frame rate but play in slow motion.

Std/Hd mode will play back at normal speed but at a conventional frame rate. (25 fps pal)
So my choice is usually the HS mode. In the FH100 that’s the dial on the back in the top right corner. Turn it the HS.
Shutter speed is the next selection you have to right. This works in the same way a camcorder works. The higher the shutter speed the sharper the object will be when they move quickly. Giving a less blur image. For Golf we recommend 1/1600 or higher. We tend not to see a great advantage once you get above 1/4000. There is a lighting issue to consider. If you put the shutter speed up too high the picture will be very dark. trial and error is the only way. Here is what we do when we use the camera.
1/50 for golf ranges at night with just the standard range lighting. You will need to put up with a blur club head through impact.

1/1600 day time use on the range and dull daylight outside.

1/4000 on bright days outdoors.

To access the settings turn the camera dial on top of the camera to S. Make sure your camera is in live picture mode on the screen. Then select the down arrow on your dial on the back under the set button. Keep selecting the down arrow until you reach the shutter speed marked S on the back of the live camera screen. There you will see 2 option to either increase or decrease the shutter speed. To do this use the right arrow next to the set button to increase and the left option to decrease. I always suggest changing both stills and video options to the same setting but its the bottom of these 2 options that you are interested in.

Frame rate - Here you can set what frames per second you require. On the Casio Fh100 the first speed is what we would recommend at 120 fps. The reason for this is that it is the largest pixel size 640 x 480 pixels. As you increase the the frame rate to 240 and higher the picture gets smaller and shaped more like a letterbox size. If you decide to increase to higher than a 120 fps second when you import into our program you will either be asked to stretch the video which will make the video look poorer quality or add a black boarder. The latter is the best option but as you will see the video it not as large but better quality.

To alter the frame rate again in live camera mode select menu, then right arrow next to the set button to move to quality then down to high speed and right arrow to select what you require.

Online Security

Online Security

Today I received what looked like a calculator from my Bank who now uses this system for Business Customers to login into their online bank accounts.  With online Banking fraud costing business £95 million a year you can understand why banks are trying to protect themselves.  How does that affect us Golf Professionals though.   Anytime you use a username or password on a third part website or on a free WI-FI area like airports, internet café’s that do not use encrypted password systems you are venerable to what’s known in the trade as sniffing.  This is what Google were doing when they were doing their street map exercise.
Fraudsters know this and target those areas for other info.  Many people, who use usernames and passwords tend to use the same ones over and over again, seldom change them and it’s only a matter of time before they crack your important login info. for sites such as ebay, amazon and bank accounts.

When we were deciding how we would secure our ebook systems it was pretty plain that all info would need to be held on our server and this is where the login would need to be also, rather than embedding login and review sections on our customer’s website.  Using this third party option makes the system open to hacking. That means if login sections are on your website and your server is not actually hosting the information you are open to attack especially if there is a password retrieval option.
Punishment for improper security is pretty severe if it traces back to you. In the US the FBI take a dim view if they find out an unsecure system and fines are very heavy.
There are some simple but great tips available from John on the Gadget show Episode 13 part 2.
